Refinishing your hardwood floors can help your home retain its value and character. Many times customers are concerned about the “mess” that refinishing hardwood floors can create with dust left in the home. When considering refinishing or replacing your floors, don’t let the dust of refinishing be a factor in your decision. We offer a refinishing and dust containment system that will remove that worry from the equation.

Our dustless system is:

  1. Cleaner
  2. Healthier
  3. Most effective

We've completed thousands of refinishing jobs, and commonly get the same questions from our customers.

Below are the top 5 questions that we receive about refinishing hardwood floors. Whether you work with us or not, we suggest asking these questions to your contractor, retailer or installer. It's a big decision to make, so take your time, and reach out to us if we can ever be helpful!

How much dust will be left in my home after the refinishing project?

Normally when you are done refinishing your hardwood floors, there is dust everywhere. No matter how much you prepare, there will usually be some dust left behind.

However at America's Floor Source we use cutting edge technology and a complete dustless system. Our dust containment trailer vac system is meant for even the biggest jobs and our non-trailer sanding system has proven to work time and time again.

With our new sanding systems (non-trailer system)  - Very little

With our dust containment trailer vac system, imagine not dusting your home for a week or 2 and the amount of household dust that would form on your table.  This is the system that we consider “dustless”.

Without the dustless trailer system, picture about a ¼ of a sandwich baggie with fine powdery dust and sprinkle that from the ceiling to the walls, and on the edges. That’s how much dust would be left in your home after installation.

The floors are perfectly clean when we’re finished because we clean them before the final coat of polyurethane.

How do I pick a color?

Our custom stain shop will help you! Before we start your job, we will meet you at your home and sand an area on your floor. Then we’ll start putting colors down for you to look at in your home, with your lighting, and against your décor.  You can pick any color or shine you want.

What is the difference between oil-based and water-based polyurethanes?

To keep it simple - dry time, color, and smell

The biggest differences are:

  1. Oil-based finishes require overnight drying before you can walk on them, they go on a little thicker, oils temporarily stink up the home, and they have an amber tone to them.
  2. Water-based polyurethanes dry in 1 to 3 hours to walk on, with a low odor/smell.  Water-based finishes are more clear. So if you want a light color floor, without the orange cast, you will want the water-based finish. Or if you wish to walk on your floors after 6 PM each night, you’ll want water-based.

How long do I have to be out of my home?

Each day until 6 PM.  Most sand jobs take about 1 week to complete. With that said, each project is custom so it is really difficult to quote an exact time without seeing the project.

If you need to be home before 6pm, we are always willing to work with you and your schedule. If your installation team is unwilling to work around your schedule, we suggest looking at other companies that can do the job.

What do I do with my furniture during the refinishing process?

We suggest renting a modular pod or using your garage to store everything, as you’ll need to move everything off the floors in the rooms that are being refinished.

If we are not using the dustless sanding system, we also recommended removing items from the walls and taping off/closing doors to connected spaces, as it will make for easier cleaning after refinishing.

If your floors need a refresh, we're happy to help you.
